Whitening and Icon treatment

Patients with severe fluorosis can be effectively treated with the infiltration technique. This is usually combined with other treatments such as whitening, microabrasion, or composite restorations.
The Icon infiltration cannot eliminate yellow or brown discoloration; therefore, in cases of severe fluorosis, whitening is generally recommended before infiltration treatment.
A professional cleaning is advised before treatment to remove surface stains and substances that could interfere with whitening. Additionally, it is essential to assess and manage dentin hypersensitivity, as many MIH patients already experience some discomfort due to enamel mottling.

Although various whitening procedures are available, home whitening is recommended. Compared to in-office whitening—which typically uses high-concentration gels (e.g., 6–35% hydrogen peroxide)—home whitening uses low-concentration peroxide gels (e.g., 5–16% carbamide peroxide gels, equivalent to 1.8–6% actual hydrogen peroxide), reducing the risk of whitening sensitivity. This makes it especially suitable for younger patients.
